How many times have you heard coaches or influencers talk about “finding your ’why?’”
There’s a reason for that. This is one of those things that truly matters and makes a huge difference. Not just in what you do but how you do it.
If either you’ve heard this but don’t know what it means OR have no idea what I’m talking about — let’s break it down real quick.
Your why is fucking EVERYTHING.
Your core reasons why you do what you do, why you want the things you want, your reason for everything you are and everything you’re about to become. Your “why” can be one thing, or it can be 10 things; it’s all up to you.
Now we could make this really complicated and write down a list of all the things that matter to you and break those down by priority and blah blah blah, OR we can boil this down to it’s bare bones and find a more raw, authentic answer.
First of all, you do need to at least identify what it is you’re trying to accomplish. Becoming your highest self is really fucking broad. What does that look like to you? Who are you now and who do you want to become? Paint yourself a really detailed picture of this version of yourself; what is she known for? What does she look like? What is she wearing? All the things.
You can write this down (recommend) or hold that image in your mind.
Now imagine you’re talking to your childhood self. That little human is full of hopes and dreams and curiosity, and she asks you why you do what you do?
What do you tell her?
You’re probably not going to give a child a detailed analysis of your actions and choices. That stripped down answer you give that child — that’s your fucking why.
It’s that simple.
We over complicate things SO. FUCKING. MUCH.
It doesn’t have to be that hard. You could spend hours journaling about your why and still not really know what you really mean at your core. This simple exercise is meant to take away all the pressure we put on finding our “why.”
I’ve personally been very guilty of feeling I had to make it this huge impactful, meaningful thing in order for it to be “good enough.” Then my mentor had me do this exercise and it was like the clouds parted and my “why” shone out bright and beautiful.
I want more out of life.
I DESERVE more out of life.
That’s it. 6 words that drive me every single fucking day. 6 words that push me to move with discipline rather than waiting for motivation.
When you find your why, everything else falls away. All the noise and the overlapping chatter in your head just fades out and you’re left with the one thing that will keep you going no matter what’s going on in your life. No matter how hard things get or how shitty you feel, you know your reason (or reasons) for doing this make every second of discomfort worth it.
You’ll wake up every day on a mission rather than fumbling around with what to do. You’ll know where you’re headed.
Take that image of your ideal self and your why and put them somewhere you’ll see every day. Give yourself a constant reminder to keep going. To keep showing up.
Use this to ground you in everything you do and watch as things start to change around you. That click is everything. Once you have it, nothing can stop you.
